Why do people call racists "ignorant"?

Whenever I see a racist question, there are always people answering and calling the asker "ignorant". Why exactly is that? I don't get it. Them being racist would just mean that they either associate one ethnicity with something bad, or that they were "brainwashed" so to speak into being racist. Neither are about ignorance. So.. I must be missing something.
